This is the Newsletter for users of ISYS OUTDOORS Software: Hillwalker, MapWise, PhotoMaps and Alpiniste. The New Year is getting a bit long in the tooth, but nevertheless, from ISYS, we wish you all a happy and successful 2007. Please do not reply to this Newsletter, as it will not be read. ISYS OUTDOORS contact details are at the end. NEW PRICES ISYS are pleased to announce that MapWise 25 Isle of Arran and Ailsa Creag is now reduced to £25 and Isle of Wight X4 is reduced to £35. WEB NEWS Until this weekend, only those who were on the database in October 2005 had access to the User Area of the Website. Now all Users can Login on the Website. The main benefit was access to upgrades at competitive prices but now that we have a method of updating the data on a regular basis, we can add more information. My thanks to Gordon and Iain from West Lothian for suggesting the solution to the last little problem. COMPETITION TO WIN £40 VOUCHER FOR ANY ISYS OUTDOORS PRODUCT We offered the £40 for the answer to the question: How often will it have been one o' clock in the course of 2006? We had many correct answers and some who could not understand why the answer was not simply 365 days x twice per day = 730. That gets most of them but misses the extra 1am on the third Sunday in October when 2am BST becomes 1am UTC (or GMT) giving three one o' clocks that day. So the answer I was looking for was 731. Special mention to Maureen in Dundee who wondered if we meant across the planet and to Margaret in St Andrews who calculated that with 24 hour time zones plus 3 half hour zones, totalling 27 with 731 each (assuming that at least one country per zone has daylight saving and that they change at 1am and 2am) this gives 19737. Both entries were included in the virtual draw. Further research has shown that there are 10 half hour time zones in use throughout the world, but I don't know how many of these have countries using daylight saving time. Incidentally, it was only recently that the clocks changed at 1am and 2am. Before that, the change occurred at 2am and 3am. It was noticing the change that prompted my question. Congratulation to our winner this month, Ivan Morley from Cheddleton in Staffordshire, who wins an ISYS voucher for £40 valid until 1 March 2007. THIS MONTH'S COMPETITION The prize this month is a staggering High Alps CD, cost £29 and worth a great deal more! The program has 29 video clips and huindreds of breath-taking photographs, mostly by Martin Moran, as well as Martin's routes for all 4,000m peaks and the unique ISYS spidering system which is far more useful than Route Cards in the Alps. Win your copy by answering the following question: How far away are the antipodes? (OK, planet Earth, assume to be a sphere, radius 6.4 Mm (Why does no one else use mega metres? Use 6,400 km if you prefer!)). Don't forget the standard rule when sending emails to ISYS to include your User Number in the subjuct line. Send your answers to: antipodes (at) isysoutdoors (dot) com to arrive before the end of January 2007. TRANSFER 500 WAYPOINTS TO GPS Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hillwalker and then Files to obtain the special version of GPSU to transfer routes of up to 500 waypoints. This software has now been tested on a wide variety of systems and GPSs and found to be reliable. Thanks to those who provided positive feedback. We will put it on release CDs and DVDs sometime in the next few months. HINTS AND TIPS How to find a Postcode. Where is AB12 3CD? Go to Main Menu | Tools | Postcode Utility and type int he postcode. The facility is available in both MapWIse 250 Great Britain and MapWise 50 Great Britain. Although there is no Mapping for Northern Ireland, postcodes for this area are included. You can export your route in an amazing variety of formats. Right clcik on the Route Card and choose Export to CSV. CSV just means comma separated variables and it produces a simple text file with one waypoint per line. You can choose what fields to include and in what order and even what character to use as a field separator; it does not need to be a comma! Spreadshhets and proprietory GPS tools can all read this file format. If you have a csv file, you can import it into a Route Card by choosing Import CSV file from the popup menu, There is no need to change your email address when you change provider. Get a @hillwalker.org address for just £1 per month. I was very sorry to see the Christams decorations disappear from the supermarkets on 24 December. What happened to twelth night? New Year without decorations? Christmas Day and the celebration is over. Now we know what the supermarkets celebrate: the profits on the pre-Christmas trade! Walk long and safely. Never Argue with a Woman One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book. Along comes a Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, "Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?" "Reading a book," she replies, (thinking, "Isn't that obvious?") "You're in a Restricted Fishing Area," he informs her. "I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading. "Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up." "If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,"says the woman. "But I haven't even touched you," says the game warden. "That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment." "Have a nice day ma'am," and he left. MORAL: Never argue with a woman who reads. It's likely she can also think . Thanks, again, to Fiona from Fife for that one. I always thought that all women could think!
